We don't stop playing because we grow old. We grow old because we stop playing.

George Bernard Shaw

Congratulations!

You’ve discovered Otterwise. Where I make whatever the hell I want and hope someone cares.

Here, you’ll see what one (aging) woman is doing to make life a little more joyful every day. Like trying new things, exploring messy things, and sharing my discoveries. I also create tools, books, and other nonsense since I can’t help myself.

If you’ve ever wanted to turn meh into wow, stick around, reach out, and maybe we can figure it out together.

The Origin Story Nobody Asked For

Born in the 1970s, I’m a writer and designer with a warped sense of humor. After graduating from college, I worked for many companies before starting my own business. I closed up right after COVID, but cannot stop creating so I started this site.

I live childfree in Colorado with my husband and two dogs. I enjoy hiking, biking, kayaking, breathing, reading, cooking, exploring, contradictions, and meeting new people. I think curiosity, design, kindness, and personal responsibility are terribly important.

Burning Questions

But why Otterwise?

When I was little, my parents took us to a used bookstore every month. I was deep into an ermine phase (yes, really). When I saw a book with an otter on the cover, I thought it was a “black ermine.” It was not.

The book was Okee the Otter. It launched my lifelong loyalty to otters, the party animals of rivers and seas.

Otters are playful, curious, smart, and can eat 25% of their body weight daily. That’s exactly what I (and probably you) aspire to be. And what this blog/website is about.

Plus, there’s the pun. Otterwise… otherwise. Another kind of wise? Get it? Nevermind…
